Stage One: Often, the Story Exists Before the Script

When anyone calls “action” on a short drama set, somebody has already worked out which story is worth the bet. Often, tracing a few hits backward lands you at a book at the start of the pipeline. Based on the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport, ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice is a 2024 hockey romance built around a secret child. On November 1, 2025, ReelShort premiered Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series drawn bite sized dramas from a novel by Cora Reilly. A web novel and webtoon lie behind Quiet in the Office!, a 2026 office romance from Korea that carries a 19+ age rating. With several app owners also running reading businesses, source material sits close at hand: Holywater operates the books app My Passion, Crazy Maple Studio makes the interactive-story app Chapters, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. Where no book exists, writers fall back on proven tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. The script’s job is to condense a long drama story into scenes that each serve up a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.

Stage Two: Casting Recognizable Faces

Casting is where the format’s economics become visible on screen. When you look through the cast lists for short series on IMDb, the same names keep showing up. Noah Fearnley returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star, after leading ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024. Rosa Singerman headlined both Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia on GoodShort in 2025, playing opposite Franky Cammarata in the second. Actors with a following on one app reach the next title with a head start, and that matters a great deal when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women, so studios are also casting with a specific viewer in mind. Over in Los Angeles, DramaBox runs a production team.

Stage Three: Filming Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days

TheWrap puts the typical cost of a Western short drama at $150,000 to $300,000 per series, with the shoot lasting eight to ten days. Wikipedia’s overview of the format paints a similar picture, putting a seven- to ten-day shoot at $150,000 to $250,000 for 50 to 70 or more episodes. If a 70-episode series is shot in eight days, the arithmetic comes to close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Jiuzhou Culture, among the Chinese producers selling abroad, has reported slimmer numbers still, placing a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. On a per-episode basis, that comes to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 for each finished episode. Jiuzhou also said about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles it had made for overseas markets were dubbed Chinese adaptations, while 20 percent were original overseas productions. Dubbing lets a studio reuse a finished domestic series, so the pricey shoot happens only once.

Stage Four: Cutting to 60–100 Seconds

The footage gets cut into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the edit suite, each framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. An episode that short has room for a turn or two of plot, so each episode is designed around a question which the next episode promises to answer. What pulls you from one installment to the next is the cliffhanger, which is the house style. Added up, the slivers of a 70-episode series come to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. Episode counts differ widely by title; GoodShort’s official pages, for example, list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. Because ReelShort also runs official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, the same footage can reach viewers who never open the app. Put simply, editors are editing video dramas for multiple screens at once.

Stage Five: Choosing Where the Paywall Falls

Last of all comes a creative decision that is also a commercial one. Free access covers the first eight to ten episodes in the standard model TheWrap outlines. In 2024 TheWrap counted the first eight episodes as free, whereas ReelShort’s own blog puts its free run at usually five to 15 episodes. After that, episodes unlock with coins; ReelShort’s blog gives the standard cost of an episode as about 60 coins. You can also buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and auto-renews, or earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog. Your store may show something different, as prices vary by country, platform and promotion. Along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs, paywalls falling right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, so placement is the controversial part. Any coin generator or modded “unlimited coins” app promising a way around the wall is unofficial and best left alone.

Stage Six: Animated and AI-Generated Series

The latest stage of production eliminates the camera altogether. Besides its live-action library, ReelShort now carries animated motion comics. Arthur Lancaster, the protagonist of the 58-episode family saga The Lost Heir, loses his memory while saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and in the end exposes the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape, and it lists no cast. A separate 58-episode ShortMax series has the same title, and the two should not be confused. DramaWave has gone farthest: according to 36Kr, more than 80 percent of its newly released content is AI-generated, and the same outlet also reported that the app’s annualized revenue topped $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Outside the apps, AI video dramas have spread too, as Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely branded it “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Steps Onto the Line

The most obvious example of established studios noticing is Fox Entertainment. Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, took on an equity investment from Fox in October 2025. Over two years, Fox also pledged to make more than 200 vertical titles. Included in the Fox-produced series already on the app are Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside. A round led by Horizon Capital brought Holywater a further $22 million in January 2026, and My Drama took the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. Seeing a network-scale producer commit to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has moved from curiosity to line item.

A Quick Look at the Production Line

Set side by side, the stages bring the logic of the business into focus. Much of the rest is arranged around the shoot, the fixed, expensive block. Pre-tested scripts tend to arrive as novels or familiar tropes, known faces anchor the casting, and cliffhangers that feed a paywall shape the edit. TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category, although fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind. The table below relies only on publicly reported figures to sum up typical time and cost at each stage. It says so rather than guessing whenever no reliable number has been published.
